Jennie Dean Park

Arlington, Virginia

LSG was prime consultant and landscape architect for the Master Planning and design of this important 12 acre community park on the banks of Four Mile Run. The design implements the previously approved Four Mile Run Valley Parks Design Guidelines.

Key design features include two new lighted diamond fields, a large playground, a group picnic shelter, restrooms and lighted basketball and tennis courts. A natural surface waterfront trail follows Four Mile Run, leading to an overlook and opportunities for nature observation. Custom entry signs, way finding and site furniture promote the unique identity and character of the park. Existing parking was reconstructed and new storm water management facilities were incorporated into the park.

The design also features a history walk, highlighting Jennie Dean Park’s importance to the surrounding Green Valley community. Historically, the park was an African American recreation area.  In 1949 it was formally established as the sole recreation area for the county’s African American citizens. Additionally, a nationally renowned artist was selected to develop a site-specific public art work that was integrated into the park renovations.
