Washington Mormon Temple

Kensington, Maryland

LSG Landscape Architecture to provide landscape architectural services for their 57-acre Washington, DC Temple in Kensington, Maryland. Dedicated in 1974, the temple is situated on a wooded hill overlooking Rock Creek Park and stands 288 feet over the Capital Beltway. The temple was patterned after the Salt Lake Temple, with six spires adjoining the building at either end.

Initially, LSG prepared a Temple Site Management Plan (TSMP) as well as construction documents for the first phase of planting. LSG conducted a preliminary site inventory of all landscape elements identified in the sample TSMP, and added additional chapters as needed. For the first phase planting plan, which covers the Temple base, LSG evaluated the previous design which was prepared by a third party, and prepared construction documents for an updated planting plan.
