LSG Landscape Architecture designed the sculpture garden for an existing over-structure courtyard at the this “Five Star” hotel and retail complex located on the edge of Historic Georgetown in Washington, DC. LSG worked closely with the Louis Dreyfus Property Group, the architects, and the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts throughout the design and approval process. The hotel hosts events for an international clientele and promotes its proximity to DC’s arts venues. The property balances the Contemporary design of its West Wing with the Traditional Parisian design of its East Wing. Throughout, a curated collection of over 1,600 pieces of art is on display, including 400 blue-chip works by artists ranging from Fernando Botero to Helen Frankenthaler.
As a transitionary space for the hotel’s East and West wings, the courtyard provides an intimate dining setting, extending the interior social space out into the courtyard and providing a tranquil natural setting to visitors. The design solution includes new organically-shaped planters, trellises, lighting, and paving, which all serve to complement the gallery pieces. The plantings provide a succession of seasonal interest, as the space hosts events throughout the year.
