LSG Landscape Architecture is providing site design services for the new Sunrise Senior Living Facility in McLean, VA. The facility is centrally located in the community’s downtown district and faces the benefits and challenges of its urban environment.
The decision to remove excessive surface parking and paving opens almost half of the total lot to green space for public and private use. Design of the site includes streetscape improvements for the well-trafficked Chain Bridge Road, a private garden area, and a dedicated public pocket park. The pocket park, deemed the McLean Heritage Garden, features moments that pay tribute to McLean’s rich history. Through collaboration with the local historical society, LSG provided designs for a carved paving inlay of the historic trolley line, interpretive signage, and the dedication of preserved mature trees on site, identified going forward as “heritage trees”. Other key design features include masonry feature walls, gazebos, walking loop paths, and detailed perimeter fencing that suit the character of McLean.
